After nearly two months of league-stage cricket, IPL 2026 now enters its biggest week with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday, where a place in the final will be up for grabs. The contest in Dharamsala pits two of the season’s most consistent sides against each other — RCB with their explosive batting and GT with a bowling attack that has dominated teams throughout the tournament.
Both teams finished the league stage on 18 points from 14 matches, but RCB secured the top spot because of a better net run rate.

RCB have looked like a far more complete side this season under captain Rajat Patidar. Their batting lineup has consistently produced big totals, while their bowling attack has backed it up far more effectively than in previous years. Much of their success has revolved around Virat Kohli at the top of the order and the experienced pace pair of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the ball.
RCB have also been one of the best travelling teams this season, winning crucial away games under pressure. They already have experience of playing in Dharamsala this month after defeating Punjab Kings at the same venue.
GT, meanwhile, have relied on a strong top order and an extremely disciplined bowling attack to reach the playoffs. Captain Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler have carried much of the batting responsibility and rarely allowed pressure to build during chases or while setting totals.
But Gujarat’s biggest strength this season has been their bowling unit. The fast-bowling trio of Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Prasidh Krishna has regularly picked up wickets with the new ball, while Rashid Khan and R Sai Kishore have controlled the middle overs.
GT will also come into the knockout game with momentum after their 89-run win over Chennai Super Kings in the final league match.
The sub-plots
Several key contests could shape the outcome of the game. Kohli against Rabada with the new ball could be one of the defining battles, especially with Dharamsala expected to offer extra bounce and movement for fast bowlers.
RCB will also be strengthened by the return of Phil Salt, who is back after recovering from a finger injury. His aggressive batting in the powerplay against Siraj could set the tone for Bengaluru early in the innings.
For RCB, Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar will be crucial against Gill and Sudharsan during the powerplay. GT depend heavily on their top-order batters, making the first six overs extremely important for both sides. The middle overs could also become decisive with Rashid Khan taking on RCB’s right-handed heavy batting lineup. However, Patidar’s strong game against spin gives Bengaluru an important advantage in that phase.
Conditions in Dharamsala are expected to produce another high-scoring game. All three completed IPL matches at the venue this season have seen first-innings totals crossing 200.
Although the surface still offers swing and bounce for fast bowlers, the true carry has helped batters score freely once they get through the opening overs. Located around 1,450 metres above sea level, Dharamsala remains one of the few venues in India where seamers consistently get movement and steep bounce with the new ball.
With both sides entering the playoffs in strong form and carrying plenty of match-winners, Qualifier 1 promises to be one of the standout clashes of IPL 2026.
